Modern Narcissus
You might make a great Congressional member.
You talked too much,
You talked a lot,
You talked so much disappointment
And I held on to a red herring.
You said you like to be honest
And that you like me oh so much
That I won, beat them all out
When I wasn’t aware this was even a contest.
You wanted to see me
That nothing would hold you back
From sitting me on your face
Shame on me for clinging to a lie told every four months.
I should have known your charm was divided,
That you’d end up like the rest,
A ghost of a man
Too timid to commit.
Do you really know what you want
Or are you just prolonging maturity
By casting a net to see what he catches
I’ll leave you to feast on the carcasses of those you left behind.
I may have been fourth or fifth or whatever in line
Or perhaps I was your last option all along
Either way I pray nobody makes you feel last place
It’s a shitty place to be and I fear you would never recover.
I can patch up the holes left by your words,
The promises I can erase from my memory,
But you I caution to select your hearing
I don’t think you could heal from another silver tongue.
A new Narcissus is what I’ll remember.
